Illustrative photos of Desiree potatoes are presented below:
Variety "Desiree", a fairly large potato belongs to the middle-season table and has its own distinctive features. The first tubers can be dug up in the middle of summer., but the main harvest is in the second half of September. Tubers are best planted when the soil is fully warmed up; spring frosts can adversely affect yields.
The bush is medium in size, moderately spreading. The formation of green mass is moderate. Leaves are dull, dark green, medium-sized, slightly wavy. Reddish-purple flowers are collected in a compact corolla, the berries are few. The root system is powerful, each bush gives up to 20 large, even tubers. The amount of small items is insignificant.
Potatoes are more productive... On poor soils, it is about 130 centners per hectare, with top dressing and more favorable weather conditions it can reach up to 380 centners.
For comparison, the table below presents data on the yield of other potato varieties:
|Desiree||130-380 c / ha|
|Crown||430-650 c / ha|
|Lileya||up to 670 c / ha|
|American||250-420 c / ha|

|Red Fantasy||260-380 c / ha|
Tubers have good immunity, do not degenerate, the seed can be harvested from year to year on their own fields.
Desiree potatoes are ideal for the southern regions. He calmly tolerates hot dry summers, but a few watering and hilling will significantly increase the yield. Potatoes need light sandy soils of neutral acidity, they are very fond of mineral or organic fertilizing.
Variety "Desiree" is resistant to late blight of tubers, potato cancer, phomosis, viral diseases. May be susceptible to late blight of leaves, apical or root rot. Thick peel protects tubers well from mechanical damage and larvae of insect pests. This is the characteristic of Desiree potatoes.
The taste of potatoes is excellent... The pulp is tender, crumbly, not watery, with light sweetish notes. Depending on the starch content, the tubers can be used for mashed potatoes, boiling, baking, stewing. When cutting and cooking, the roots do not darken, retaining a beautiful yellowish tint.
The variety is suitable for the preparation of French fries and chips (also under industrial conditions).
Origin of the variety
The Desiree potato variety was bred by Dutch breeders. Included in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 1997. Zoned for the Middle Volga region.
Recommended for growing in warm climates... Potatoes easily tolerate heat and short-term drought, but are sensitive to frost. It prefers fertile light soil; in poor clay soil, the yield is noticeably reduced.
The variety is suitable for industrial cultivation, the harvested potatoes are stored for several months without losing their commercial qualities. The large, even tubers are ideal for sale and can be transported over long distances. The Desiree variety can be a good base for breeding work. The tubers do not degenerate, the seed material for subsequent plantings can be harvested independently.
Advantages and disadvantages
Among the main advantages of the variety "Desiree":
- high taste of root crops;
- good productivity;
- drought resistance;
- little marriage, tubers have a beautiful appearance;
- suitable for preparing various dishes and ready-made products;
- the harvested crop is well stored and transported;
- cultivation in industrial volumes is possible;
- resistance to many diseases.
The variety also has disadvantages.... These include:
- susceptibility to scab, phomosis and late blight;
- tubers do not tolerate frost or excess moisture;
- thick rind makes it difficult to cut root vegetables.
Agricultural technology for this variety is simple. Tubers are planted when the soil is fully warmed up; spring frosts can kill the plants. Before planting, the seed is treated with disinfecting compounds and growth stimulants. Disinfection is necessary, as the tubers can be affected by fungal diseases.
Landing is carried out according to the standard scheme... The distance between the bushes is 35 cm, the row spacing is 75 cm. It is recommended to add humus or wood ash to the holes during planting. It is possible to use mineral complexes with the inclusion of urea or ammonium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium sulfate. During the planting season, you need to spud at least 2 times, a single watering is recommended. For weed control, row-spacing mulching can be used.
It is better to dig up tubers at the end of the growing season; it is recommended to cut off all the tops 2-3 days before harvesting.
Potatoes dry well before storage.... It is better to select tubers damaged during digging and not to put them in the cellar. Seed material is collected from the most high-yielding and strong bushes, it must be stored separately. For planting, you can use both whole potatoes and segments with eyes.
Diseases and pests
The Desiree variety is highly resistant to potato cancer and viral diseases. Susceptible to common scab, phomosis, late blight of leaves. Sufficiently resistant to late blight of tubers.
For prevention, it is recommended to carefully select seed potatoes. The fields for sowing are regularly changed; during rest, the plots are sown with oil radish, phacelia or meadow grasses.
Before the start of the season, the fields are treated with herbicides. During an epidemic of late blight, spraying with medicinal preparations is recommended..
Plantings are often affected by pests: Colorado beetles and their larvae, wireworms, bears and potato moths.
